We were back in the car headed toward Rhapsody’s Grams’ house. I was so excited that I was finally going to get three weeks of uninterrupted time with her. My mind was so focused on that fact I almost missed the house. The car screeched to a halt.
“Holy shit, Chord. I thought the whole point of me being with you was to take care of me not perform seatbelt checks.” Rhapsody loosened the seatbelt.
“Sorry. My mind wandered and I almost missed your Grams’ house.”
“It’s fine. Let’s go.”
“Wait. I can go in and get what you need.”
“Uhm…no. I think I can do this one thing before I become an invalid.” Rhapsody opened her door.
I jumped out and ran around to help her out. Thankfully she only sighed heavily then let me help her out of the car. We walked slowly to the house. From the outside it appeared no one was home.
“Doesn’t look like anyone’s home.”
“I’ve got my key.” Rhapsody pulled out her keys and unlocked the door. “Grams? Cassie?”
Her voice echoed through the house. When no one greeted us we continued up the stairs to Rhapsody’s room. She stopped at the top step. A last minute grab of the handrail prevented me from slamming into her.
“Are you ok? I said I can get what you need.”
“Shut up! I hear something.” She whispered.
“Wha-“ Rhapsody slapped her hand over my mouth. I strained my ears to hear what she was hearing. Moments slipped by and I didn’t hear anything. When I opened my mouth to say so I heard something. It was a rhythmic movement along with grunting.
“Does this house have ghosts?”
She gave me a go to hell look then began creeping down the hall. Each step down the small hallway amplified the sound. It was clearly coming from behind Rhapsody’s door.
I stepped in front of her effectively blocking her way in. “I think I should check it out. Stay out here.”
“Save the chivalry bullshit. That’s my bedroom and if someone is doing ungodly things on my bed I want to be the one to bust them.” She whispered a bit too loud because the noise ceased. Rhapsody looked at the door then said, “I swear to God, Cassie. If you are having sex with Alec on my bed because of some love/hate thing I’m putting Nair in your shampoo.”
“Dammit.” My shoulders fell.
Rhapsody reached behind me and flung the door open. I braced for whatever was about to happen. She screamed and I shut the door with a slam. The sight we’d just witnessed would be burned in our minds forever.
“Yep. That was your mom and my dad bumping uglies.” I confirmed while rubbing my eyes.
“Rhapsody?” Emmerson Lee’s voice floated from behind the door.
“Mom? What the hell were you doing?”
“You’d think she’d know being preggers with Chord’s kid.” Jimmy’s voice answered.
“Shut up, moron. You aren’t helping.” Emmerson snapped.
“This is not happening right now.” I groaned.
The door creaked open. Emmerson Lee stood in an oriental robe. Jimmy wore only a pair of low slung jeans with his arm around Emmerson’s shoulders.
“Hello, sweetie. I see you’re out of the hospital. How are you and the baby?” Emmerson put on the caring mother face.
“As you can see I’m fine and out of the hospital. Not that you’d know or care considering you didn’t visit.”
She blushed and Jimmy pulled her closer to him. “We weren’t allowed to leave this house. You’re Grams took over our supervision since you two were so busy.”
“You act like we were on a fucking vacation.” I snarled.
“Have you come home?” Emmerson asked.
“I’m just here to pick up a few things. But, I can just buy what I need later.” Rhapsody turned away.
“Wait! Rhapsody are you and the baby ok?” Emmerson grabbed Rhapsody’s arm.
With a tug, she pulled her arm from her mother throwing her off balance. I steadied her making sure she didn’t fall. She glared at Emmerson.
“You’ve beat it into my head to stay away from Jimmy and anything to do with him. How the hell do you explain you fucking him on my bed?”
Emmerson had the good sense to look ashamed but Jimmy just smirked. I clenched my fists ready to punch him in the face the moment he opened his mouth.
“Things happen.” Emmerson explained.
Rhapsody grunted. “Convenient. Stay away from me, Chord and the baby. From here on out I don’t know who you are. Your bullshit is no longer my problem. Goodbye.”
She marched away from Emmerson Lee. I looked at the two of them. Emmerson had tears glittering in her eyes. Jimmy continued to look smug. I turned away from them to follow Rhapsody.
“Aren’t you going to say anything?” Jimmy asked.
I stopped and turned toward him. “You two are disgusting human beings that don’t deserve to be around our little girl.”
“A little girl?” Emmerson’s voice sounded watery.
I left them together in the doorway of Rhapsody’s room. When I caught up to her she was frozen at the bottom of the stairs. Her Grams and Cassie were staring at us.
“I’m sorry, Grams. I just can’t anymore.” Rhapsody sobbed.
She pulled Rhapsody into a hug. “It’s ok, sweetie. Just don’t close your heart off completely.”
She shrugged then walked out the door. Grams looked at me then said “Take care of my girl. She’s going to need you more now than ever.”
I nodded. “I plan on it.”
Grams pulled me into a hug then said, “After I have a chat with my daughter I will send over some of Rhapsody’s things.”
Leaving her Grams’ house I ran out to the car. My heart broke when I saw the tears streaming down her face. Her pain made me want to go back into there and give Emmerson and Jimmy another piece of my mind. But, the welfare of my daughter and her mother was much more important than two old self-centered rockers.
