I was so glad I was inheriting her.&nbsp;&nbsp;Though I had an office I never had a regular assistant due to my consistent traveling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou ready for this kid?\u201d Edie walked with me to the large conference room.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think I have a choice.&nbsp;&nbsp;I\u2019m just glad you\u2019ll be my right-hand gal now.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Edie stopped and looked at me.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cEason there\u2019s-\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEason!&nbsp;&nbsp;There you are.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;My father\u2019s booming voice came from the door of the conference room.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOf course, Dad.&nbsp;&nbsp;You said you needed me here.&nbsp;&nbsp;So, I\u2019m here.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPerfect.&nbsp;&nbsp;Make sure you sit next to me.&nbsp;&nbsp;Today is one of my proudest days.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;He placed his arm around my shoulders.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat I made a board meeting?&nbsp;&nbsp;That\u2019s a pretty low bar.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;I laughed as I followed him into the bustling conference room.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ll understand soon enough.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;He left me to mingle with a few of the board members.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I took my seat and found my two brothers were already there.&nbsp;&nbsp;Wilder had an arrogant smile on his face.&nbsp;&nbsp;Kai, my youngest brother, had his face in his phone.&nbsp;&nbsp;I wouldn\u2019t even be surprised if he didn\u2019t realize he was at a board meeting.&nbsp;&nbsp;The chatter continued around the table until my father found his way to his seat.&nbsp;&nbsp;A tense feeling came over me.&nbsp;&nbsp;Could I really do what my father wanted?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGood morning everyone.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;My father began.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cI hope all of you are doing well.&nbsp;&nbsp;Thank you all for coming on such short notice.&nbsp;&nbsp;I don\u2019t anticipate this to be a long meeting.&nbsp;&nbsp;However, I have some important items I need to share.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;The tension in the room could have been cut with a knife.&nbsp;&nbsp;I looked over my shoulder to Edie and gave her a smile.&nbsp;&nbsp;She had a strange look on her face and avoided my look.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWithout any more fanfare, I am here to tell you that I plan on retiring as of Monday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A murmuring went around the table.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve chosen Eason as my successor.&nbsp;&nbsp;With his ability to bring in a diverse amount of business I know he will take Hill Incorporated to the next level.&nbsp;&nbsp;However, not only will I be retiring but our beloved Edie will be also.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I snapped my head to him.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cWhat?\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My father gave me a quelling look then smiled back at the board.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cTo make things official, we need a vote.&nbsp;&nbsp;All those in favor raise your hand.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I didn\u2019t pay attention to the vote.&nbsp;&nbsp;My safety net was leaving along with my father.&nbsp;&nbsp;Fear I hadn\u2019t felt in years made my blood freeze.&nbsp;&nbsp;What the hell was I going to do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s unanimous.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;Father declared.&nbsp;&nbsp;His hand landed on my shoulder jerking my attention back to the issue at hand.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cEason Miller Hill will be the new President and CEO of Hill Incorporated.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clapping filled the conference room.&nbsp;&nbsp;I looked at the smiling faces that had more faith in me than I did.&nbsp;&nbsp;Standing from my seat, I put a hand around my father\u2019s shoulders and acted like this was exactly what I wanted.&nbsp;&nbsp;In my head, I was riding free on my ranch in Wyoming.&nbsp;&nbsp;That thought alone brought me a sense of calm that I needed to get through the meeting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>***<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re retiring too?\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;I asked Edie at her desk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry, Eason.&nbsp;&nbsp;It\u2019s just that when your father told me he was leaving I felt like that was my cue to retire and spend some much-needed time with my family.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I have a new grandbaby that I want to cuddle.&nbsp;&nbsp;I think I\u2019m going to start there.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t say I\u2019m not disappointed that you won\u2019t be my right hand but I\u2019m happy for you, Edie.&nbsp;&nbsp;You deserve it.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;Bending down I gave her a hug.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou bet she does.&nbsp;&nbsp;Eason please come in here.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;My father called from inside his office.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI better go.&nbsp;&nbsp;Don\u2019t be a stranger.&nbsp;&nbsp;I\u2019d be willing to let you up to the office if you felt like you would be willing to drop off some of your fantastic baking.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Edie winked.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cI just might do that.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I left Edie to her packing and went into my father\u2019s office.&nbsp;&nbsp;Shutting the door behind me, I approached his desk.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAre you happy, Eason?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHappy?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYes.&nbsp;&nbsp;Are you happy with my decision?\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m glad you\u2019re retiring.&nbsp;&nbsp;I think it\u2019s well deserved.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not what I\u2019m talking about.&nbsp;&nbsp;Are you happy to be the man in charge now?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I stared at my father.&nbsp;&nbsp;The idea of being honest and telling him that it scared the shit out of me wasn\u2019t something I think he wanted to hear.&nbsp;&nbsp;But, other words wouldn\u2019t form anything else that would be believable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYour silence says everything, Eason.&nbsp;&nbsp;Look, I know you enjoy traveling and spending time on your ranch.&nbsp;&nbsp;That doesn\u2019t need to stop.&nbsp;&nbsp;In this day and age, you can have both you just need to find the balance.&nbsp;&nbsp;Do you understand what I\u2019m saying?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;No.&nbsp;&nbsp;I had no idea how I\u2019d do anything that he just made sound so easy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGood.&nbsp;&nbsp;I know you are the right man for this position.&nbsp;&nbsp;I\u2019ve got even more good news for you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOh?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve already found you an assistant.&nbsp;&nbsp;She sounds more than capable.&nbsp;&nbsp;If she\u2019s half as good as I\u2019ve been told she will be better than Edie.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;My father smiled then said softly, \u201cDon\u2019t tell her that though.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I laughed.&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cYou\u2019re secret is safe with me.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlright, you better go start packing up your office.&nbsp;&nbsp;The next week is going to be a doosy and starting Monday morning the helm is all yours.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nodding I walked to the door.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEason?\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve got this.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThanks, Dad.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I left the office with conflicted feelings.&nbsp;&nbsp;What I needed in that moment was a stiff drink.&nbsp;&nbsp;When I entered the elevator that would take me down to my office, I sent out a text to my brothers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Me:&nbsp;&nbsp;I need a drink<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Kai:&nbsp;&nbsp;I\u2019m
