Edie rubbed my back.  \u201cIt\u2019s ok, Skylar.  You didn\u2019t know.  How could you know?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m getting fired, aren\u2019t I?\u201d  I looked up at Edie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, you aren\u2019t.  It\u2019s a forgivable mistake.  You would never have known about Monaco or be able to stop her.  I don\u2019t even know I would have been able to stop her if I had been here.  It will be okay.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI know but-\u201c  
\u201cMs. Albright!  In here now.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh god.\u201d  I felt tears pooling in the back of my eyes.  Crying wasn\u2019t an option.  I wasn\u2019t going to be one of those girls who cried at work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGo on.  It will be ok.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Standing from the desk, I took a deep breath before opening the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCome in and shut the door behind you.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I closed the door behind me and approached his desk.  He was staring at his laptop.  I stood there awkwardly for a moment waiting for him to acknowledge my presence.  He slammed his laptop shut making me jump.  The cold look in his eyes froze me in my spot.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAre you always like this, Ms. Albright?\u201d  He asked. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUhm\u2026I\u2019m not quite sure what you\u2019re talking about.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAre you always a shitty employee?\u201d  He leaned back in his chair crossing his arms across his chest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I felt the blood drain from my face.  \u201cPardon me?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNevermind.  What were you thinking letting all of them into my office without notifying me?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m truly sorry, Mr. Hill.\u201d I gritted between clenched teeth.  His previous comment still stung.  This was the first time she\u2019d ever had an employer talk to her like that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t answer my question.  Why did you do it?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUh\u2026she said she-\u201c <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He cut me off.  \u201cI don\u2019t give a flying fuck who she said she was.  You do your job right or you can get your ass out of here.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A copper taste filled my mouth.  I was biting my tongue to keep from saying something I\u2019d regret. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Hill continued.  \u201cJust because you\u2019re fucking my cousin doesn\u2019t mean you get a free fucking rid around here.  You do your god damn job.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I blinked at him.  Fucking his cousin?  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m doing what?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI know you got this job on your back by fucking Dylan.  I just can\u2019t believe you\u2019d cheat on him with me.  I guess you\u2019re just free with your love.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was the final straw.  I didn\u2019t give a fuck who this guy thought he was but he wasn\u2019t going to call me a slut and get away with it.  No one did that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWho do you think you are?\u201d  My voice barely above a whisper. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat did you say?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI said who do you think you are?\u201d  I glared at him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m your fucking boss.\u201d  He stood from his desk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t give a fuck if you were the president of the damn country.  No one talks to me that way.  I already apologized for my error.  I will not grovel to you or any man.  If that means you fire me then so be it.\u201d  I turned to leave but stopped with my hand on the doorknob. \u201cOh and by the way I\u2019ve never fucked Dylan.  We are friends.  And if I had known what an epic piece of shit you are I would never have had my tongue in your mouth.  It\u2019s a mistake that I will never repeat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exiting the office, I barely held it together.  Tears gathered in my eyes.  Turning to Edie I said, \u201cI\u2019m sorry, I need to leave.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her lips were thin and she nodded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

***<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAre you going back?\u201d  Beth asked as she pet Sherlock, a Maine Coon who\u2019d just given birth to her first litter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I cuddled one of Sherlock\u2019s kittens and shrugged.  \u201cI don\u2019t know.  I mean I was only there for one day.  I feel like I\u2019d disappoint Dylan if I left after one hiccup.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo one would blame you.  He was way out of line talking to you like that.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s going on in here?  What are you doing here, Skylar?\u201d  My brother, Ian, found us sitting on the floor in one of the exam rooms at his veterinary clinic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI needed kitty cuddles.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He furrowed his brow then looked over at Beth.  \u201cHow is Sherlock doing?  Is she taking to her babies?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe\u2019s doing well, considering her owners didn\u2019t know she was a pregnant female until a couple days ago.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGood.  Let me know if you need anything else.  I am going to need you to help me with Mrs. Stewart\u2019s Batman and Joker.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ll be right there.\u201d  Beth placed Sherlock down with the rest of her kittens then looked at me.  \u201cAre you going to be ok?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I rubbed my cheek against the kitten in my hands.  \u201cI\u2019ll be fine.  Give me a bit longer with kitten cuddles and then I should be able to solve all of the world\u2019s problems.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beth stood from her seated position then gave my shoulder a squeeze.  \u201cI have no doubt.\u201dI wished I had the same faith Beth had in me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
