There it was\u2014the brief glimpse of the woman he\u2019d met in Dinsmore\u2019s carriage, not the quiet mouse he\u2019d waltzed with. \u201cAh, but I believe this tree, right here,\u201d\u2014he slapped the trunk with a rakish grin\u2014\u201cmarks the dividing line between my estate and yours. \nHer eyes narrowed at his teasing before plucking up the tweed cap from where it lay on the ground and tugging it back into place upon her head. She then picked up the spent pistol and tucked it into the narrow, single holster gun belt looped around her waist. \u201cNo matter. \nHis jaw dropped as she wound her fist into the horse\u2019s bridle, loosely slung around its neck, and pulled herself deftly up onto the horse\u2019s back. She sat astride in a way that made his pulse shorten. \u201cWhere is your saddle?\u201d he managed.
\nShe eyed him imperiously. \u201cI don\u2019t like them, not that it\u2019s any of your business.\u201d
\n\u201cIt isn\u2019t safe,\u201d he ground out, surprised by his sudden irritation.
\n\u201cI\u2019ve been riding without a saddle since I was a child,\u201d she shot back. \u201cI\u2019m safer without one than I am with one.\u201d
\n\u201cAs you were before you got thrown into the river?\u201d Archer couldn\u2019t resist taunting.
\nHer jaw jutted forward, a mutinous look in her eyes. She pressed her lips together, likely to stop herself from uttering something completely inappropriate. Perhaps one of the colorful words she\u2019d been using while attempting to climb out of the gulch.
\n\u201cAnd what if you were attacked by the masked bandit\u2014again<\/em>?\u201d he continued. \u201cOr haven\u2019t you had enough danger for the time being?\u201d
\n\u201cI can protect myself,\u201d she said.
\n\u201cWhat with?\u201d he asked before he thought of the clean hole in the boar\u2019s forehead.
\nBriannon sighed dramatically. \u201cWhy, with my knitting needles, of course.\u201d
\nStruck again by her lightning-quick wit, the short bark of laughter left his lips before he could contain it. \u201cPray, where was your pistol the other night when you were robbed?\u201d
\n\u201cIn my knitting reticule, of course, where all ladies\u2019 pistols are kept,\u201d came her tart response. \u201cI assure you, if I had my pistol, the outcome of that robbery would have been quite different.\u201d<\/p>\n
