\u201cAdam!\u201d\"\"<\/a>Slowly he turned back to face her and her stomach clenched with a thrill of fear and desire. Last night\u2019s civilized dancer in a tuxedo was completely gone. In his place stood a snarling, angry, completely aroused soldier.<\/p>\n

She used the balls of her feet to scoot farther against the wall and measured the distance between her current location and the bathroom door. Her calculations proved unnecessary.<\/p>\n

With an untranslatable growl, Adam flung himself into the bathroom, slamming the door behind him.<\/p>\n

She waited a minute then tapped on the door. \u201cUm, Adam? Are you okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe damn door doesn\u2019t lock. Back. Away.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alrighty then. With him behind a closed door, the aching in her lower belly subsided a degree. \u201cAdam, will you tell me what\u2019s going on?\u201d She bit her lip and fondled a stiff nipple through her blouse before registering where her hands were. Adam needed to answer her questions, like right now, because she had no idea why she was locked in this small conference room with an angry, sexy man. \u201cAdam, please.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou work for a newspaper. Don\u2019t you read it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, sure, but that doesn\u2019t explain why we\u2019re locked in here together.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThink, Loren. What did the articles say about how the Program gains new members?\u201d<\/p>\n

She racked her brain trying to remember. \u201cUm, through birthing a new generation, right? But\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

The door opened a crack and she could see his anguished expression peeking through.<\/p>\n

\u201cUse your brain. Do I have to explain the birds and the bees? You\u2019re no virgin, are you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know how babies are made, Adam,\u201d she said. \u201cBut the article said you only breed with women who are your perfect genetic match\u2026oh\u2026\u201d Shep\u2019s words came back in a flash. \u201cThey think I\u2019m your genetic match?\u201d<\/p>\n

He gave a curt nod and started to close the door again. She shoved her foot in to stop him. \u201cHow did they figure that out so quickly?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe cheek swab at the entry. I\u2019m such an idiot. I should\u2019ve guessed last night.\u201d<\/p>\n

She pushed the door open to see him better and sat back on her heels on the threshold between rooms. \u201cHow could you have guessed? It\u2019s not like I had my DNA code printed on my dress. How does it work, exactly?\u201d Loren asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot sure of all the scientific details, but I guess the best way to describe it is like a numbers game. The doctors know there are certain genetic combinations that will produce certain qualities. The Program has a list of their top desired traits.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd how do they usually find a matching female? I assume most are not so accommodating as to show up at the front door like I did.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adam turned at the sharp bite in her voice. \u201cYou\u2019d be surprised,\u201d he muttered.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo they kidnap women off the streets and check their blood?\u201d she asked. \u201cOr wait, let me guess, the Red Cross is actually a sham organization front for you to use as a recruiting pool.\u201d<\/p>\n

He shifted at her guess, telling her she was somewhat accurate.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh my God. I\u2019m right. I see you avoiding my gaze.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Red Cross is an excellent organization doing important work,\u201d he said. \u201cBut, on occasion, we will pull samples from them or other research sites to scan for appropriate genetic matches.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then what? You kidnap them? Oh wait, you do that for fun, like you did me.\u201d She folded her arms across her chest and stared at him, daring him to answer.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. We invite potential candidates in for a job interview. Doctor, administrative assistant, teacher for the day care, accountant, you name it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd do you lock them all in a room with their potential match?\u201d<\/p>\n

He flung her an exasperated look. \u201cI don\u2019t know all the details. It\u2019s not my department. I do know you should not have drunk the water. I can\u2019t believe you drank the fucking water. You\u2019re feeling the effects right now, aren\u2019t you? Worse than last night.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are you talking about? Why wouldn\u2019t I drink the water? And what should I be feeling?\u201d she asked nervously, but she had a very good inkling as to what he referred.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe ache. You were a homing beacon for me last night. I could barely let you go.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI managed to leave,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

He cocked his head at her. \u201cYeah, you did. How?\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked genuinely curious, but she couldn\u2019t help noticing his hand was directly over the formidable bulge in his pants, massaging roughly. \u201cYou frightened me. I\u2019d never felt that way with a man before, even\u2026even in bed with my last boyfriend.\u201d She swallowed over the lump in her throat her confession had formed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat about your current boyfriend? Does he heat you up?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCurrent boyfriend? I\u2019m not\u2014 Oh. I, um, lied. I\u2019m not dating anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n

A flicker of a smile passed his lips so quickly she wasn\u2019t sure it had really happened.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat about now? Are you feeling it now?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

She felt a blush creep from the top of her breasts up to the roots of her hair, and she couldn\u2019t look him in the eye as she nodded. \u201cMy nipples are starting to hurt. Did drinking the water do that?\u201d<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t seem embarrassed at all as he accepted her confession matter-of-factly. \u201cIt\u2019s one of the symptoms on the Rovinsky scale. The water is laced with a drug that makes you more receptive to your match. It\u2019s going to make you crazed for the next twenty-four hours, and I\u2019m going to respond. If I weren\u2019t your match, you wouldn\u2019t feel as aroused. It\u2019s how they test the science behind the blood work.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d Twenty-four hours of feeling like this, and she was starting to worry this was just the beginning. Her arousal was increasing every second.<\/p>\n

\u201cRovinsky, our founder, came up with a list of what happens when two genetic matches meet. I don\u2019t have it memorized, but I remember painful nipples for the female is on there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cA matched couple will be able to find each other, even in a crowded space, up to several thousand feet.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat you\u2019re saying is you could drop us at either end of Disney and we\u2019d find each other, even without cell phones?\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded. \u201cRight at the Haunted Mansion, but don\u2019t say \u2018us\u2019. We,\u201d he waggled a finger in the space between them, \u201care not a match. I can\u2019t be matched.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy not?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy reasons are my own. I won\u2019t let Shep manipulate me like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

She was shocked at the hurt his rejection caused, like a bowling ball hurled at her heart. She shouldn\u2019t be sad. She didn\u2019t want to be a breeding partner either. She had a life to get back to.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are the other symptoms?\u201d Maybe if he listed more of them, they would discover they were not a perfect match after all.<\/p>\n

He ticked them off on his fingers. \u201cI\u2019ve already said homing beacon for both partners and painful nipples for the female. Your body is getting ready for pregnancy.\u201d<\/p>\n

She glanced down, stunned. She could almost feel her womb rippling to life. \u201cWhat else?\u201d she asked in a whisper.<\/p>\n

\u201cMale arousal.\u201d He looked almost shamefaced as he gestured to the erection fighting free of his pants.<\/p>\n

She stared a shade longer than was acceptable, nearly having to sit on her hands to stop from stroking the alluring bulge.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t do that,\u201d he said in a strained voice.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo what?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t look at me like you want a piece. I\u2019m holding on to my control by a thread. If you make a move, I\u2019ll take you.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
