\nAnd I was the one about to lose.
\nKatelyn O\u2019Malley was nothing like I\u2019d imagined.

\nI\u2019d diligently done my homework\u2014 reading Scandal<\/em> not once, but twice\u2014 before I\u2019d hopped on a plane to Oregon. I\u2019d thought the novel would give me insight to this perplexing woman I was about to meet.
\nIt hadn\u2019t.
\nNot one bit.

\nAt first, cracking her ironclad shell seemed like a daunting task. She had come off dry and dull.

\nShe let out a choking cough, patting her chest with her palm. \u201cI\u2019m not a good liar,\u201d she argued.
\n\u201cReally? You seemed to have everyone around us fooled, including that charming elderly couple who offered their congratulations on their way out.\u201d
\n\u201cThat really was sweet.\u201d She smiled, a touch of whimsy in her gaze. \u201cDid you see the way they held hands? I\u2019m pretty sure he even grabbed her ass when she walked past him to go to the restroom.\u201d

\n\u201cI just wonder what it\u2019s like\u2014 to be that in love after all that time,\u201d she said, bending forward and resting the curve of her chin on her hand.
\n\u201cHow do you know it has been a long time?\u201d I asked. \u201cMaybe they got married late in life.\u201d
\nShe shook her head. \u201cI don\u2019t think so.\u201d
\n\u201cWhy?\u201d I asked, curious how she\u2019d reached that conclusion.
\n\u201cThere was a familiarity in the way they touched. The way they leaned into one another, the way they walked. It was as if they\u2019d been doing so forever.\u201d
\nI studied her for a quiet moment, recalling the intensity of her words and the passion in her voice. It was the first time since meeting Katelyn O\u2019Malley, I could actually see a sliver of Laura Stone, the author, somewhere inside.

\nI needed to remember that. \u201cThere\u2019s not much to tell,\u201d I said, straightening slightly in my chair. \u201cRather boring really.\u201d
\nWe continued to chat about our lives. She told me more about her work at the college. I rambled off more lies about mine until the check came around.
\nI was feeling quite good about myself as I led us outside.
\nMy head was clear.
\nBut then I saw the way the moonlight highlighted her golden-blonde hair. I became mesmerized by the sway of her hips and the soft curves of her body.
