I barely heard her parting words as the screen door slammed shut.\u00a0 My head spun in desperation as the anger coursed through my bones.\u00a0 \u201cGet back in here Eviana!\u201d she continued to scream at me.\u00a0 \u201cWe are not finished with this conversation!\u201d<\/p>\n

I was already racing down the deck stairs toward the sandy beach, kicking off my shoes and unbuttoning my blouse.\u00a0 We are for now<\/em>, I thought as my blood boiled with rage and resentment.\u00a0 I was going to be trapped!\u00a0 How dare they?\u00a0 This was not the eighteenth century anymore!\u00a0 I had rights<\/em>!<\/p>\n

I stumbled onto the sand, taking just a brief moment to savor the warmth and the feeling of the grains massaging my toes.\u00a0 My shirt came off and I started to unzip my jeans.\u00a0 No one was around.\u00a0 But I wouldn\u2019t care anyway.\u00a0 The water was calling me and it was the only voice that I could hear now.\u00a0 With one pant leg off, I hopped along in my forward progression until the other one was free.\u00a0 My oasis was so close now that I could taste the salt in the air.\u00a0 The sun broke free of a cloud, stopping me for a moment.\u00a0 It was late afternoon with sunset still a few hours away, but the sky had already turning multiple shades of pink and orange.\u00a0 The coloration reminded me of the inside of a brilliant conch shell.<\/p>\n

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.\u00a0 I knew there would be hell to pay when I returned to the house.\u00a0 Marguerite, my mother, had tolerated my rebellious behavior when I was younger, giving me more freedom and second chances than anyone in our clan.\u00a0 But apparently now, at seventeen, I was an adult.\u00a0 Adult enough to bear children.\u00a0 Adult enough to participate in clan gatherings.\u00a0 Adult enough to navigate our youth through their transition period.\u00a0 But not<\/em> adult enough to choose who to love.<\/p>\n

A slight breeze wafted off the ocean, bringing with it scents that filled my gut with longing.\u00a0 The freedom of the ocean.\u00a0 Why couldn\u2019t I just stay there forever?\u00a0 A gull called overhead, beckoning me to join him.\u00a0 The splashing waves calmed my inner rage as they ebbed and flowed in a hypnotic pattern.\u00a0 A distant moan of a shipping vessel reminded me of our history.\u00a0 I opened my eyes to see that I was standing alone along miles of sandy beach interlaced with large rocks and cliffs emblematic of the northern California coast.\u00a0 So beautiful.\u00a0 I stripped off the rest of my clothes and ran into the ocean.<\/p>\n

As soon as I was under the water, I could feel the transition begin.\u00a0 My lower body ached as the bones adjusted from a life on land to one at sea.\u00a0 Both legs began to fuse together and work as one.\u00a0 My foot bones elongated while I prepared for the agony.\u00a0 I was accustomed to the changes now, but it was still a struggle of mind over matter.\u00a0 Breaking through the surface of the water, I grabbed one last breath before the final jolt of pain ravaged through my body.\u00a0 I bit my bottom lip and squeezed my eyes shut, willing the moment to be over.\u00a0 At last I felt an electric tingle move from my hips to my toes as the hardened iridescent, scales appeared on my tail.\u00a0 I opened my eyes to find that the internal transformation was complete as well.\u00a0 My vision cleared.\u00a0 My lungs expanded.\u00a0 I could hear for miles.\u00a0 I was free.<\/p>\n

So I swam.\u00a0 I swam away from the shore and the house that I lived in.\u00a0 I swam away from my fears and obligations as though they could disappear with the distance.\u00a0 I would temporarily forget my responsibilities, my duties, and the argument with my mother.\u00a0 In here, I wasn\u2019t trapped.\u00a0 The sea was my true home.\u00a0 I was a mermaid and this was my world.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

When The Council requests a demonstration of Eviana\u2019s mermaid powers, she finds herself with an opportunity to win back Brendan\u2019s heart.\u00a0 But her orders to train with a repulsive merman and the presence of an attractive new suitor challenges Eviana to embrace her leadership and resist temptation. Lucian is after her, and no one seems to understand why.\u00a0 Loyalties are tested as the casualties increase, showing Eviana that sometimes it is impossible to delineate between friends and enemies.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I wanted to punch him in the face.<\/p>\n

For at least the hundredth time today, I swung my fist towards his infuriating smirk.\u00a0 He easily dodged it, of course, and proceeded to look down at me like a child.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019re getting closer,\u201d he teased.<\/p>\n

Throwing my arms down in frustration, I shook my head.\u00a0 \u201cHow am I supposed to learn if you won\u2019t even let me get a hit in?\u201d<\/p>\n

He laughed and resumed a fighter\u2019s stance.\u00a0 \u201cHow are you supposed to learn if I just stand still and let you pummel me?\u00a0 That\u2019s not ever going to happen in the real world.\u00a0 Now, try with your legs.\u201d<\/p>\n

I rolled my eyes and shifted my feet so that my stronger right leg was in front.\u00a0 Ideally, I\u2019d be having this battle underwater where my legs were not an issue.<\/p>\n

\u201cProtect your face,\u201d he yelled at me and I lifted my fists up to nose level.\u00a0 I could do this.\u00a0 He\u2019d taught me how to incapacitate my enemies.\u00a0 Just go for the knee<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I faked a few smaller kicks, pretending to hesitate.\u00a0 Then, like a ninja, I struck.\u00a0 The underside of my right foot was directly on target and I expected it to land a perfect hit to the side of his left knee.\u00a0 Only it didn\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n

Out of nowhere, he grabbed my ankle and I was suddenly airborne.\u00a0 The world spun around me once before I landed with a thud on my back, effectively knocking the air from my lungs.\u00a0 I even saw some stars floating by.\u00a0 My training sessions were getting harder every day, and after this debacle, I decided that it was time to quit.<\/p>\n

A shadow moved above me and I used my hand to block out the rest of the sun.\u00a0 Looking up at his ominous figure I said, \u201cI\u2019m done.\u201d<\/p>\n

I heard another laugh rumble through my trainer\u2019s chest as he reached down and grabbed my arm.\u00a0 In one swift motion, he pulled me up off the ground.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou would have broken my knee with that kick, Eviana.\u00a0 I had to stop you.\u201d\u00a0 I glared at him.\u00a0 \u201cWhat?\u201d he continued.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m not going to let<\/em> you hurt me.\u00a0 But you did well.\u00a0 I knew that you\u2019d learn eventually.\u201d<\/p>\n

I jumped towards him as fast as I could, intending to get him in a choke hold.\u00a0 My arms slipped around his neck, but my body kept rolling over him as he bent forward and used my momentum to toss me towards the ground.\u00a0 In less than two seconds, I was on my back again with a forearm pressing against my throat and my pride seeping away into the dirt.<\/p>\n

\u201cAhh!\u201d I screamed in frustration.\u00a0 The annoying grin on his face told me that I would never beat him in a fair fight.\u00a0 Palmer was my cousin, my trainer, and also one of the numerous protectors now living at my house.\u00a0 We\u2019d been practicing for the past two weeks and although I couldn\u2019t hurt him yet, Palmer reassured me that I was improving.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

When Graham and I surfaced back inside our coral-walled prison, we noticed that someone had brought us two plates of food.\u00a0 Without speaking to him, I pulled myself out of the water and willed my legs to come back to me.\u00a0 Considering our history, I might have had some concern over Graham seeing me naked, but once again, I couldn\u2019t muster up the energy to care.<\/p>\n

\u201cI see they\u2019ve improved the food,\u201d he commented.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoesn\u2019t matter, I\u2019m not eating,\u201d I said without even looking at the plates.\u00a0 Now that we had the light from underwater, it made it easier to move about the room and identify what Lucian\u2019s cronies were feeding us.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNope,\u201d I said as I finished pulling my shirt over my head.\u00a0 When I turned around, I saw Graham chewing on a piece of pineapple and sifting through the rest of the items.\u00a0 Much to my dismay, my stomach growled.\u00a0 It was so loud that Graham chuckled.<\/p>\n

\u201cPerhaps your body wants some nourishment.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t care.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSuit yourself, tart.\u201d<\/p>\n

I rolled my eyes and walked over to him.\u00a0 The smell of the food was overwhelming and I couldn\u2019t help but look down at it.\u00a0 \u201cDon\u2019t call me that,\u201d I said but spoke more to the plate.\u00a0 There was some type of fish wrapped in a banana leaf and it smelled delicious.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re drooling,\u201d he teased.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s probably poisoned.\u201d<\/p>\n

He bit into another piece of fruit.\u00a0 \u201cWell, I haven\u2019t eaten anything solid in days, so I\u2019ll take my chances.\u201d\u00a0 Grabbing his plate, he sat down cross-legged on the floor and proceeded to stuff his face.<\/p>\n

Tempted, I fought the urge to give in.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t really know what the purpose of my hunger strike was and how it would help get me out of here.\u00a0 I guess I just wanted to be difficult.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
