\u201cWorried about history repeating itself?\u201d Ashley meets my eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWith you?\u201d Yes, please.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

She gives a slight nod in response.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNever. I\u2019m not some dumb eighteen-year-old kid with his head up his ass. I\u2019m not my father. You\u2019re not your parents. We\u2019re adults now.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She gazes out over the water for a moment. \u201cI don\u2019t see any, do you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAny what?\u201d I scan the sky.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFlying pigs.\u201d Her smile is shy and more vulnerable than I\u2019ve seen in years.<\/span><\/p>\n

I bump her shoulder again with mine. \u201cStranger things have happened.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSays you.\u201d She returns the pressure with her arm against mine with a brief nudge.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou mentioned dinner? Were you serious?\u201d I circle back to her comment before my random business idea.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe both gotta eat. Plus, the baristas can close up for me. It\u2019s good responsibility for them to have.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou trust them?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI do. If they mess up, then it\u2019s a learning lesson for all of us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen did you get to be so wise?\u201d I almost say smart, but she\u2019s always been smart. Definitely has the brains along with the body and the looks. She\u2019s the trifecta. With a cherry on top. <\/span><\/p>\n

I pick up the stem and then toss it over to the other bench. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHey! I thought that was my present,\u201d she protests.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou want a cherry stem that I\u2019ve tongued into a knot?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYour tongue\u2019s been in my mouth, so it\u2019s kind of the same thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

We both stare at the stem laying on the concrete in who knows what combination of fluids and dirt. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll make you another one.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI have a better use for your tongue.\u201d She surprises me with a small hop to peck my lips.<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019re going to need some rules of engagement. A SWOT of our own. <\/span><\/p>\n

First, we need to stick to well lit, public places. <\/span><\/p>\n

Second, we shouldn\u2019t be alone.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ten minutes of sitting on a bench together and certain parts of my body are coiled and ready to spring into action, not caring it\u2019s daylight and a few hundred bored people are sitting in their cars with nothing better to do than watch us. <\/span><\/p>\n

Nah, they\u2019re all on their phones. She could probably straddle me on this bench and no one would pay any attention.<\/span><\/p>\n

Damn, if I\u2019m not tempted to test this theory.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAre you coming?\u201d She\u2019s halfway back to the coffee hut.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI wish,\u201d I mumble, dipping my head and mentally cursing myself for setting limits.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ashley\u2019s smile says she probably heard me and agrees.<\/span><\/p>\n
