\nThe class was completely empty. I wasn\u2019t even sure he knew I was still in my seat. If he did, he was good at ignoring me as he packed up his laptop.
\n\u201cContrary to the rumors you\u2019ve probably heard, I don\u2019t bite.\u201d
\nI jumped when he spoke. Now that the lecture hall was no longer filled with students, the acoustics of the large space bounced his deep voice all over the walls.
\nI stood and began my walk of shame down to the front of the classroom. There was no doubt I owed the man an apology, even if he wasn\u2019t a professor\u2014a professor who would be my new boss for at least the next fifteen weeks. I wanted to kick myself in the ass for not apologizing last night before I left the bar. Now it would seem like I was only doing it because of the situation I was in.
\nWhich was true, don\u2019t get me wrong, but I didn\u2019t want it to seem<\/em> that way.
\nI took a deep breath. \u201cI\u2019m so sorry about last night.\u201d
\nHis face was unreadable. \u201cI figured you might be, right about now.\u201d
\n\u201cI obviously thought you were someone else.\u201d
\n\u201cSo I assumed. You thought I was the asshole. The one with the big dick, was it?\u201d
\nI shut my eyes. For the last ninety minutes, I\u2019d replayed the entire exchange from last night over and over in my head. I thought I\u2019d remembered everything I said, but apparently I hadn\u2019t. When I reopened my eyes, Professor West was still watching me. His stare was pretty damn intense.
\nI started to babble. \u201cMy friend Ava went out with this guy Owen for a month or so. He was full of shit from day one, but she didn\u2019t see it. Actually walked up to her when she was leaving work one night and said, \u2018Do you mind if I walk you home? My mother always told me to follow my dreams.\u2019 She fell for it, the entire act, from the first day. Then one Saturday, he was supposedly out of town on business, and she was across town running errands for her mother. She took a shortcut through Madison Square Park on her way back from the grocery store and ran into him. He was with his wife and kids.\u201d
\n\u201cAnd you thought I was him, apparently?\u201d
\nI nodded. \u201cShe came in during my shift and started drinking Long Island iced teas. When Owen walked in, she pointed to where he was standing and said he was the one in the blue shirt.\u201d
\n\u201cAnd we were both wearing blue shirts, I take it?\u201d
\nI couldn\u2019t help but smile, thinking of Ava last night. \u201cActually, no. Ava\u2019s not much of a drinker. Turned out she was more sloshed than I thought. Owen\u2019s shirt was brown\u2014not even black that could be mistaken as navy or something.\u201d
\nI saw Professor West\u2019s lip twitch.
\n\u201cAnyway, I\u2019m really sorry. I barely gave you a chance to speak, and then when I realized what had happened, I was so mortified I didn\u2019t even stop to apologize.\u201d
\n\u201cI accept your apology for last night. Even though you shouldn\u2019t be approaching a man in the hallway to tell him off alone, your intentions were admirable.\u201d
\nI should have shut up and been grateful he\u2019d accepted my apology. Should have<\/em>. \u201cWhy can\u2019t I approach a man in the hallway?\u201d
\nHe leveled me with a stare. \u201cBecause you\u2019re five foot nothing in a loud bar, and no one would have heard you if I\u2019d dragged you into the men\u2019s room and locked the door.\u201d
\nI folded my arms over my chest. \u201cI can take care of myself.\u201d
\n\u201cI didn\u2019t say you couldn\u2019t. I said you shouldn\u2019t put yourself in those situations.\u201d
\n\u201cBut you insinuated that I couldn\u2019t by making that statement.\u201d
\nHe zipped his leather bag closed. \u201cMs. Martin, I just accepted your apology for calling me an asshole last night. Would you like me to retract that acceptance?\u201d
\nGod, I really was an idiot. Being around this man seemed to turn me into a psychopath. \u201cNo. I\u2019m sorry. I acted like a jerk, and I\u2019d like to start over, if that\u2019s possible.\u201d
\nHe nodded. \u201cEverything prior to this morning is forgotten.\u201d
\n\u201cThank you.\u201d
\n\u201cBut this morning is not. I won\u2019t accept lateness. Don\u2019t let it happen again.\u201d
\nI swallowed. \u201cIt won\u2019t.\u201d
\nHe lifted his worn, brown leather laptop bag over one shoulder. \u201cMeet me here at five tomorrow. We\u2019ll go over the syllabus and the classes you\u2019ll teach, as well as my grading rubric.\u201d
\nThat was smack in the middle of my shift, but I\u2019d figure something out. \u201cOkay.\u201d
\n\u201cAre you done for the day?\u201d
\n\u201cI am. I actually have to get to work. I\u2019m covering Ava\u2019s shift because she isn\u2019t feeling too well after last night. We both work at O\u2019Leary\u2019s.\u201d
\n\u201cYou waitress there?\u201d
\n\u201cWaitress, bartend, occasionally tell off patrons.\u201d
\nThat earned me a full smile from Professor West. God, he should do that more often.<\/em> No, forget that. He definitely shouldn\u2019t.
\n\u201cI\u2019ll walk out with you.\u201d
\nWe walked through the halls together and out to the parking lot. When we arrived at my car, I stopped. \u201cThis is me. So\u2026five o\u2019clock tomorrow?\u201d
\nProfessor West looked at my beat-up old Subaru. \u201cYou\u2019re parked in a spot reserved for the Provost. You got a parking ticket.\u201d He squinted. \u201cActually, it looks like you have two<\/em> parking tickets. Was your inspection expired or something?\u201d
\nCrap.<\/em> \u201cUmm\u2026no. I keep an extra ticket in the glove compartment and stick it on my windshield when I\u2019m forced to park illegally.\u201d
\nHis brows shot up. \u201cInventive.\u201d
\n\u201cObviously it doesn\u2019t always work.\u201d
\n\u201cObviously.\u201d
\n\u201cThey need more parking. When you\u2019re late, it\u2019s impossible to find a spot.\u201d
\nHe studied me. \u201cLateness is a frequent occurrence for you, I take it?\u201d
\n\u201cUnfortunately, it is.\u201d
\n\u201cThen I should clarify something I said earlier.\u201d
\n\u201cOh, no, that\u2019s not necessary. I won\u2019t be late for your class.\u201d
\nHe took a step closer and leaned in. \u201cI\u2019m glad to hear that, Ms. Martin. But that\u2019s not what needs clarification.\u201d
\nI swallowed. God, he smells good.<\/em>
\n\u201cEarlier I told you I didn\u2019t bite students.\u201d He smiled, and I felt the wickedness from it shoot down to some interesting places. \u201cI don\u2019t. But I make no promises about not biting feisty TAs.\u201d
