Music, Rachael Wade and a Review

Today I have the great pleasure of hosting a guest blog by Rachael Wade in promotion of her newest release Preservation.  Rachael discusses the influences of different music on her writing of Preservation.

The Music Behind the Story: Preservation by Rachael Wade

I always say that music and writing are synonymous for me. I can’t have one without the other. Whether I’m listening to music before or during my writing time or simply drawing inspiration from songs I recall listening to as a kid, music and lyrics are direct hotwires to my stories and always influence them in some way.

In Preservation, my latest contemporary romance, music makes its way directly onto the pages of the story. Kate and Ryan meet at Easy Street Records (Queen Anne) in Seattle to watch the band The xx play, and Kate regularly turns to music to de-stress and reflect on what’s going on in her life. Whether subtly or overtly mentioned, music plays a huge role in Kate and Ryan’s story.

Music also naturally worked its way into the story because in real life, I’m an avid music buff. One of my favorite pastimes is going to concerts, and I

especially love discovering new indie artists. I prefer to go to smaller venues for shows and tend to listen to a lot of stuff that most people haven’t heard of. There are so many artists out there that are a thousand times better than those playing on mainstream radio. I love a lot of mainstream music, don’t get me wrong. But I’d choose to listen to my favorite small-name artists over the mainstream stuff any day.

I listened to the following songs while writing Preservation and would recommend them to anyone. As you can tell, they’re all pretty commercial, but they are some of my all-time favorites and were perfect for Kate and Ryan’s story. I’d love to hear about your favorite artists—mainstream or not! Who should I listen to? I’m always open for recommendations. I just might use them for inspiration for the next novel. 🙂

Review: Preservation by Rachael Wade

This is the second book I am reviewing of Rachael Wade’s in as many weeks.  Each time I read her I get more and more impressed.  Preservation is a contemporary romance between two people who have rough pasts they must get past to be together.

We first meet Kate Parker soaking wet and being made a spectacle of by Ryan Campbell in his classroom because she is late for class.  Ryan asks her to stay after class to discuss her punctuality.  They get off to a very rough and edgy start.  Ryan is a playboy and Kate is a workaholic with issues with people doing things for her.  After a couple of coincidental meetings they realize they are drawn to each other.  This is destined to be a complicated relationship with him still being her teacher.  The complications continue as ex-girlfriends, mistresses and flings pop out of Ryan’s past forcing Kate to question whether they should be together or not.  Ryan and Kate’s relationship is a roller coaster of will they or won’t they stay together.  Just when you think its over it begins again anew.  They have an epic love story full of trials and tribulations.

I loved this book.  It was a quick read and drew me in to the point I didn’t want to put the book down.  I started and finished it in one day.  Ryan and Kate’s romance is wonderful.  Her best friends Dean and Carter are fantastic brother-like best friends who don’t think anyone is good for Kate.  The love that develops is excellently portrayed.  The emotions and back story of each character are well laid out and you can empathize with what they are going through.
