Happy Friday Everyone! This Friday’s installment of Fresh Face Friday is a great Young Adult novel by Katie O’Sullivan. Son of a Mermaid is a wonderfully imaginative story that draws you in lets you ride the waves. Be sure to check out the rest of my review after the book blurb.

After a freak tornado devastates his Oklahoma farm, the fifteen-year-old orphan is whisked away to Cape Cod. Struggling to make sense of his new surroundings, he’s trying hard to deal with feelings of abandonment… and the emotions stirred by a girl he meets along the shore.
Kae belongs to an undersea world hidden from drylanders. The daughter of royal servants, she knows the planned marriage of her Princess to the foreign King should put an end to the war between the clans. But two things stand in the way of lasting peace: the ambitions of the foreign King’s regent, and rumors of the Princess’s bastard child.
Sparks fly when she meets Shea, but could the cute drylander really be the Son of a Mermaid?
Review:
Son of a Mermaid is a wonderful tale…no pun intended. Shea is a normal teenage boy from Oklahoma. School is coming to an end and Summer is on the horizon. When tragedy strikes and unexpectedly turns his world upside down. He is forced to move with a grandmother he’s never met and live by the ocean which he’s never seen. He soon meets Kea who is a beautiful if not naive girl. But, Kea has a secret. She is a mermaid. She’s not just a mermaid she is a servant to a mermaid princess. Though Kea and Shea are different at first Shea soon discovers he’s more like Kea than he knows. But, just as Shea learns how different he really is he is forced to stop a mermaid assassination attempt and a potential coup. Throughout Shea’s discoveries Kea is there and their budding relationship develops into more. In the end can Shea handle his new life, save a kingdom, love a girl and just be a normal teenage boy?
I really enjoyed this story. The characters were very well done and stayed true to their roles in the book. I loved Shea and Kea’s love story. It has so much potential. Hailey was also a really great asset. I did wish we had more explanation on Lucky. I know there is more there. 🙂 I also felt that there was some holes that were never really cleared up in the plot. The essentials of the story didn’t have any holes but there were definitely loose ends. I’m hoping this means another book in Shea’s story. I could see so much especially when he goes to Atlantis. I would say that overall if you like a good story with Mermaids you will love Son of a Mermaid.

Katie O’Sullivan lives with her family and big dogs next to the ocean on Cape Cod, drinking way too much coffee and inventing new excuses not to dust.
She writes YA and romantic suspense novels, as well as working as an editor. For the last four years, she’s worked as the Editor of CapeWomenOnline.com magazine and writes “The Write Way” column for the magazine.
She hopes her debut YA novel, SON OF A MERMAID, will make a big splash this summer, engaging young readers with a Cape Cod tale of a boy who discovers both his roots and his destiny far below the waters of Nantucket Sound.
